Sometimes babies pass mucus or even a little blood in the stool due to gut irritation or allergy to milk protein. It’s important to rule out infection or allergy.
Possible causes include:
Mild gut irritation – due to minor infection or immature digestive system
Food allergy – especially cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA): Can happen even if baby is only breastfed (from mother’s diet)
Small tear near anus (anal fissure) – if baby is straining or has hard stools
Swallowed mucus – if baby has cold or drools a lot
