Rat Bite Doubt
Hello Doctor, Today while walking at home, a small house rat suddenly bumped into my foot. Immediately after, I noticed a very tiny red spot (like a small drop of blood), but after washing with soap and water, there is no visible cut, scratch, or bite mark on the skin. Currently, I feel slight tingling at the same spot, but there is no pain, swelling, or visible wound. My last tetanus shot was about 4 months ago. I wanted to ask: 1. Could this be considered a rat bite exposure? 2. Do I need rabies vaccination or any preventive treatment? 3. Is the tingling something to be concerned about? Thank you.

To clear your doubt,  you can go for vaccination. Otherwise there is no risk.

From your description: • Rat only bumped into foot • No visible bite mark • No scratch seen • No bleeding after washing • No swelling or pain • Tetanus taken 4 months ago
Next Steps
✔ No rabies vaccine needed ✔ No tetanus needed (already vaccinated recently) ✔ Observe area for 48 hours ✔ Apply antiseptic once if you want reassurance Seek medical help only if: • Clear bite mark appears • Swelling develops • Fever occurs • Increasing redness or pain Otherwise, no preventive treatment required.
Health Tips
✔ Avoid repeatedly checking the spot (increases sensation awareness) ✔ Tingling often occurs due to anxiety and nerve sensitivity ✔ Wash hands and feet normally ✔ Stay calm — this is not a rabies-risk event Medically speaking, this does not qualify as an exposure requiring vaccination. If you’d like, I can guide you through a quick exposure risk checklist to give you complete reassurance. Booking a short online consultation would help close this concern confidently so you don’t keep worrying about it unnecessarily.
