Question - sigmoidoscopy
I've been diagnosed with constipation and anal fissure two years ago. No tests were performed at that time. Only counselled to change the diet and add more fiber to the diet. I've been on laxatives since then. Since a week, I am getting severe irritation while bowel movement and blood oozing sometimes. No stomach pain, no weight loss and no other symptoms. Consulted gastroenterologist and he planned for sigmoidoscopy to check whether its a fissure or not? My question is what can be found out with sigmoidoscopy and is it correct technique to check my condition? Is it possible that I have a problem otherthan fissure based on symptoms? Please advice.

Hello You have already answered your own question. Sigmoidoscopy is done to know what is the cause of bleeding - is it really due to fissure or any other problem like rectal ulcer/polyps etc. Only caution that I would suggest is sigmoidoscopy to be done after the initial treatment so that it is not done when you have pain.
