At this early stage, around 3 to 4 weeks by your last period, a positive urine test is a reliable first sign of pregnancy, so a beta hCG blood test isn't essential unless your doctor wants a baseline or there's any bleeding or pain. The first dating ultrasound is usually done around 6 to 8 weeks from your last period, since that's when a heartbeat is reliably seen.
Next Steps
Continue folic acid daily through early pregnancy, and book your first antenatal visit soon so your doctor can confirm dates and start routine blood work. Eat small frequent meals for the nausea, stay well hydrated, and avoid alcohol, smoking and strenuous exertion.
Health Tips
See your obstetrician without waiting for the scan if you get bleeding, severe cramping or persistent vomiting.
