Available pneumonia vaccines for adults: PCV (Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine)
Common names: PCV13 (Prevnar 13), PCV15, PCV20
This vaccine provides strong and long-lasting immunity. PPSV23 (Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine)
Common name: Pneumovax 23
Covers additional strains and is used in selected cases. How many doses are required? For healthy adults aged 19–64 years: • One dose of PCV (PCV13 / PCV15 / PCV20) is usually sufficient. • PPSV23 is not routinely required unless there are risk factors. For adults aged 65 years and above OR those with high-risk conditions (diabetes, chronic lung disease, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, smoking, immune compromise): • Either one dose of PCV20 alone, OR • PCV13 / PCV15 followed by PPSV23 after 1 year (schedule decided by doctor).
Next Steps
In adults under 65, vaccination is recommended if there are medical conditions or risk factors. A doctor can assess and advise the most appropriate schedule.
