Physiotherapy for pre & post TKR surgery
Hi! I keep hearing that physiotherapy is essential for TKR before and after the surgery. I consulted some top ortho doctors in India and they said no it is alright to do physiotherapy for just 1 or 2 weeks post surgery. When I listen to doctors from USA all of them advise pre and post TKR physiotherapy. Who is correct? Thanks

Every individual is different.  So pre rehab becomes very important  for individuals  who are living a  sedentary lifestyle, obese and other problems where post operation  there are chances of delay in gaining the muscle strength due a viscous cycle . Post operative physio varies from  4-6 weeks. Few don't need after 4 weeks few need till 8 weeks. According  to me pre rehab is a good to do. And post rehab is mandatory.

1. Pre-rehab. Pre-rehab is to keep you functionally active, to increase muscle strength and range of knee. This will help you to recover faster post surgery. 2. Post surgery rehab - This depends on patient to patient, some patient recovers faster, some take more time. 2-3 weeks of regular Physiotherapy is must to recover faster and in better way. Getting muscle strength isn't easy task, so that takes lil time to recover. Post 3 weeks alternate day physiotherapy for 1-2 weeks or may not but patient should continue exercises for 2-3 months themselves.
Next Steps
Lot of icing to reduce inflammation, swelling and pain.

Prehab is a concept to get your muscles working before the surgery so that the post-operative recovery is better. It depends upon the age of the patient and the current muscle health. TKR will replace the worn out part, reduce pain but the person has to become active with the help of muscles.
