The English National Health Service now includes "HPV triage " in its screening programme. This means that if initial screening test shows borderline results or low-grade abnormal cells, a further test for HPV is made on the sample. If this shows HPV is present, the patient is called for a further examination, but if no HPV is present the patient resumes the usual screening schedule as if no abnormalities had been found.
Studies of the accuracy of HPV testing report:
sensitivity 88% to 91% (for detecting CIN 3 or higher) to 97% (for detecting CIN2+)
specificity 73% to 79% (for detecting CIN 3 or higher)to 93% (for detecting CIN2+)
