Hello and good morning. The MRI report shows that you have a tear of the ACL and medial meniscus. These two structures are present inside the knee joint and are important for stability and proper movements of the knee. Without a clinical examination, by just looking at MRI report, it is not possible to comment whether a surgery is needed, or what kind of surgery is needed. Another important factor is how long ago this injury happened, if it's recent, surgery may need be delayed by a few weeks. Surgery may be needed if you have any of the following symptoms: 1. Feeling of one bone of the knee sliding over the other while walking or knee feeling unstable while walking or climbing up or down stairs. 2. Feeling of the knee getting locked in a specific position. Final decision regarding treatment can only be made after clinical examination anx seeing MRI films.
Next Steps
You should consult an orthopaedic surgeon, preferably one who has expertise in arthroscopy of knee and sports injuries. They can tell you the further course of action after examining you. If it appears that a surgery is not needed, then you will have to undergo a regimen of exercises for strengthening the muscles around your knee. Please note that it takes time for your muscles to be strengthened by exercises, so it is very important that you strictly follow what the physiotherapist or surgeon tells you, and regularly do the exercises. If a surgery is needed, it'll most likely be an arthroscopic surgery(or keyhole surgery in layman's terms). They will make 2 to 3 small cuts(less than 1 cm) on your knee and use a tube shaped camera and instruments to operate inside the knee. The ACL will need to be replaced by some other tissue from your body(such as one of the tendons around your knee). The meniscus may need to be removed or repaired, based on the type of injury.
Health Tips
Think of the knee like a machine with multiple parts, if one part of the machine is broken or damaged, the machine can still work, but it won't be working smoothly. If you keep using the machine with the damaged part, eventually other parts will also get damaged and the machine will work less efficiently, and may even stop working. Please don't take this injury lightly and follow the advice of doctors. Take care, and get well soon.
