Natural Iron intake help post pregnancy
Hi doctor, I have recently delivered a baby. Post delivery my haemoglobin level went down to 9 and I became anemic. Doctor advised me to take iron folic acid and calcium tablet for a year. Problem is due to iron tablets I'm having severe constipation and bleeding from anus. Kindly prescribe me a diet for natural iron rich foods and folic acid rich food so that I can increase my haemoglobin level without taking tablet.

Hi, These nutritional supplements are needed for atleast 6 months and Calcium can be continued for a year till you breastfeed. Also iron rich foods like Garden cress seeds (Halim) 2 tsp can be added to lemon water and taken. Red poha, Bajra,Date, dried Fig (Anjeer), Leafy vegetables are rich in iron. Calcium rich foods like Milk,Curd,Sesame seeds (Til) can be included.Drink a glass or two of warm water after waking up. A glass of water every hoour should help.

Hi! It’s unfortunate, but very common for new moms to get anemic post delivery, and iron supplements are known to cause severe constipation. Please include green leafy vegetables, sprouted dals , beetroot, dry fruits to improve iron levels and lots of raw vegetables and water to help you deal with constipation. However, just dietary intake is not sufficient to bring your levels up , so you may need to re check your Hb levels and then we can decide on a suitable supplement.
Next Steps
Recheck Hb levels, stay hydrated , consult on practo.com for further advice
Health Tips
Do not take over-the-counter medication for constipation, don’t delay in diet modifications, don’t stop/start any medication without expert advice
