More side effects
My mother has been taking Riscon Plus tablet for 3 months as per doctor's prescription. The main reason for taking it is auditory hallucination. But now I'm noticing some changes in my mother. Memory loss, feeling like vibration in legs, similarly vibration-like sensation at the back of the head, no interest in watching TV, mobile, newspapers etc. It feels like irritation. Even if TV volume is high, she doesn't like it. My question is, are all these common? Does she need to take this tablet lifelong?

Hello, Thank you for explaining the situation clearly. Ricon Plus (which usually contains Risperidone combination) is commonly prescribed for schizophrenia and auditory hallucinations. It is effective, but it can sometimes cause side effects, especially in elderly patients. The symptoms you are noticing may be related to: - Memory issues and low interest- This can be due to: 1. Negative symptoms of schizophrenia 2. Sedation from medication 3. Mild depressive features 4. Age-related cognitive slowing 5. Vibration sensation in legs or back of head – This could indicate: 1. Extrapyramidal side effects (mild movement-related side effects) 2. Akathisia (inner restlessness) 3. Neurological causes (needs evaluation if persistent) 4. Irritation with noise / reduced interest in TV - This may be: a. Sensory sensitivity b. Negative symptoms c. Medication-related emotional blunting These symptoms are not uncommon, but they should not be ignored.
Next Steps
-Do NOT stop the medicine suddenly. Stopping abruptly can worsen hallucinations or cause relapse. What should be done: - Consult a psychiatrist for dose review. Doctor may: 1. Reduce dose slightly 2. Add medicine for side effects 3. Switch to another antipsychotic 4. Assess cognition (especially at 65 years)

Hey, i understand your concern First of all, vibrations in the body are mainly due to the side effects. No need to worry about them, with proper dose and other medications it goes off. Regarding other symptoms it could be due to illness itself or due to the recovery phase of previous illness. Further history will be required to know about it.
Next Steps
Please do Consult the psychiatrist.

The above changes certain things can occur due to medications and certain things due to the disorder as well. You need to discuss with the treating psychiatrist and take things forward so as to ensure the benefits outweigh the side effects during treatment.

It's a good drug but might need dose adjustment along with some additional drug considering her age.

Glad that you reached out. The vibration you are complaining about can be a side effect of medication. Certain complaints may be part of illness itself. She needs titration or change in medication. Its difficult to comment on if she needs lifelong medication without consulting the patient.however it is not necessary that she might need lifelong course. Donot worry and Kindly consult psychiatrist for further adjustment of medications.
