Mild fever after high blood sugar
A week back, I had to rush my father to a doctor due to high blood sugar. He is a type 2 diabetic for around 20 years and his glucose levels are usually under control. he is also not under any special medication. however this past week his blood sugars shot up quite high(426) and I took him to a doctor. they prescribed him some meds and ran some blood and urine tests. the meds worked good and his sugar level normalized in a day or so. however he is been having mild fever (99-101) since last week. he has also been complaining about frequent urination. apart from these two, he seems to have no issues. the weird thing is that both his blood work and urine culture came back negative for any infection. Hence I am a bit concerned as to where is the fever coming from. We have started a antibiotic "cipro" since yesterday. I guess my question is, is it normal to have mild fever after high blood sugar ?

Hello There, In case of Hyperglycemia, patient may feel Fever. Lethargy and weakness are accompanied symptoms sometimes. If I'm not wrong, As per patient's history, his BSL was 426mg/dl and after starting medication, within a day or two it drastically came down to 99-101mg/dl., which is not quite good. Though BSL range is high, it should come to normal gradually with help of medication. Sudden fall in blood Suger level may land up patient in 'hypoglycemic-Coma' state which is life threatening condition.
Next Steps
Monitor Blood Sugar level in Fasting and post prandial state and Body temperature daily. Consult your treating physician for Fever problem and Medication dose adjustment.
Health Tips
Do not start any antibiotics without doctor's consultation.
