Some days for the last year or so I wake up with a massive lower back pain. It goes away if I sit for sometime. Not sure what the main reason for this might be. Is it a joint or muscle issue?

Mean while apply moist heat pack twice daily before any exercise.
Since it's occurring after a period of rest that is after resting it might be related to joint stiffness.

It could very easily be muscle related but since you mention that this has been happening for a year or so, it'd be great to get it assessed by a good physiotherapist nearby. And if you do plan on getting a consultation please try to recollect as much as you can from when the pain started and if there were any incident that might have lead to the pain ( as small as a jerky movement ). It is important to figure out what is causing the pain to fully treat it.
