My mother is experiencing extreme pain in one side of her hip, which is hindering her walking and daily activities. She has a history of arthritis in her knees. But this time her hip is getting affected.

Pain from hip joint is felt mostly at groin..
If your mother is having pain on the back side of your hip..it could be a radicular pain from back which is very common...
Next Steps
you should check the movement at hip joint ...if movement are not painful..it is mostly from lower back
