Hello ma’am
Knee replacement is the last resort which is used to improve the quality of life of the patient.
Lot of factors decide on whether to opt for the surgery or not.
1) age of the patient
2) severity of symptoms
3) radiological evaluation
4) co-morbidities( diabetes, obesity, hypertension etc)
5) financial
If the age of the patient is less than 60years with grade 3 or less and the pain is not chronic enough , the patient can try to push the surgery for a few years and be managed conservatively.
But sad to say that surgery in inevitable
If not operated on time, other problems set in
Like 1) severe deformity of limb
2) listhesis and spondylitic changes in spine etc
Next Steps
For now until she is mentally prepared for surgery as advised by your doctor
You can take the following precautions
1) avoid -kneeling, squatting, cross legged sitting, climbing stairs, Indian type of toilet
2) analgesics for the pain
3) PHYSIOTHERAPY and knee exercises is a must
4) AVOID intra-articular injections as much as possible, it’s just a temporary relief with no scientific evidence in helping curing the disease
5) take calcium, multivitamin and collagen2 supplements which my aid in preventing further damage of the joint.
PS- all the above modalities help and slow down the further damage to the joint. These are not the cure for it
Thankyou
What is her age
How is the walk
Is there any deformity
When does she have pain
Whether there is any pain at rest
Need to examine and consult for all of these
Then we can decide if conservative management and other interventions can help her or not
Generally upto grade 3, patients respond well to PRP and Physiotherapy
