There are many possible causes of sudden knee pain without a known injury. Some of the common causes include: Overuse: If you have been engaging in activities that involve repetitive movements such as running, jumping, or squatting, it can cause overuse injuries like patellofemoral pain syndrome or iliotibial band syndrome. Arthritis: Knee pain can also be caused by different types of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. Arthritis can cause pain, stiffness, and swelling in the joint. Tendinitis: Tendinitis is an inflammation of the tendons that attach to the knee joint. It can be caused by overuse, aging, or injury. Common types of tendinitis include patellar tendinitis and quadriceps tendinitis. Bursitis: Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursae, small fluid-filled sacs that cushion the joint. Knee bursitis can be caused by overuse, injury, or infection. Meniscus tear: The meniscus is a piece of cartilage in the knee joint that helps to cushion and stabilize the joint. A meniscus tear can be caused by a sudden twisting motion, overuse, or degenerative changes due to aging. Ligament sprain or tear: Knee ligament injuries are common in athletes and can be caused by sudden twisting or a direct blow to the knee. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL) are commonly injured in sports. Baker's cyst: A Baker's cyst is a swelling behind the knee that is caused by excess fluid buildup in the joint. It can be caused by arthritis, injury, or a tear in the meniscus. It is recommended that you consult with a doctor, to determine the exact cause of your knee pain and the appropriate treatment. They may recommend rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) therapy, physical therapy exercises, or other treatments based on the underlying cause of the pain.
