Just having a ligament tear is Not an indication of surgery. If you have symptoms from ACL insufficiency, which is feeling of instability of knee and regular giving way of knee , then the first thing is to see if physiotherapy will help. If the issues with knee is affecting your daily activities, then consider surgery. Knee pain as such may not be an indication for surgery for ACL reconstruction. Have a detailed discussion with an Orthopaedic Surgeon who does ACL reconstruction.
