Urticaria, commonly known as hives, is a skin condition characterized by the sudden appearance of raised, red, itchy welts or wheals on the skin. Here's some information for patients: 1. **Causes:** Urticaria can be triggered by various factors, including allergic reactions, medications, insect stings, certain foods, infections, stress, and physical factors like pressure or temperature changes. 2. **Symptoms:** Symptoms of urticaria include red, itchy welts on the skin that can vary in size and shape. They often come and go within hours. 3. **Types:** There are two main types of urticaria:    - Acute Urticaria: Lasts for a few hours to six weeks and is usually caused by an allergic reaction.    - Chronic Urticaria: Lasts for more than six weeks and often has no specific identifiable cause. 4. **Treatment:** Management typically involves antihistamines to relieve itching and inflammation. For chronic cases, a doctor may recommend other medications or treatments based on the underlying cause. 5. **Prevention:** Identifying and avoiding triggers is key. Keep a diary to note when and where hives appear, which may help pinpoint triggers. 6. **Consult a Doctor:** If you have persistent or severe hives, it's important to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. 7. **Emergency:** In rare cases, hives can be part of a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. If you experience difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or a drop in blood pressure, seek immediate medical help. Remember, this is general information, and you should consult a healthcare provider for a personalized assessment and treatment plan for your specific case.
