Is surgery required
The doctor stated that my daughter should have knee surgery because he believes she has a possible torn MCL. My question is does she need to have the surgery or is there other methods that we should explore

Hi. Torn MCL alone doesn't warrant surgery as long its not come with a bone fragment. Also, depending on which part of the MCL is torn decides its management. If it's from the upper part and middle part you can apply plaster for 6 weeks don't put weight on the involved leg for 6 weeks and it usually will heal. If the tear is from the lower half then only surgery may give superior outcomes. Pls note these are for grade 3 MCL tears. Grade 1,2 tears should be managed conservatively always.
