My periods started at age 14 and became irregular around age 15. At age 16, I was told that I had ovarian cysts and was prescribed medicines to regulate my periods. I was also given another large pink-colored tablet, but I don’t remember its name. After taking the medicines, I experienced sudden weight gain. I later consulted another doctor who said the previous medicine dosage may not have been appropriate. PCOD/PCOS was never confirmed. My periods are still very irregular—sometimes I don’t get them for around 3 months and sometimes up to 9 months. I want to know the possible cause and what tests or evaluation I need.

Irregular cycles for years with a history of weight gain on past medication points towards a hormonal cause that needs fresh evaluation rather than relying on the old diagnosis.
Next Steps
Please get a hormonal panel, thyroid test and pelvic ultrasound done through a gynaecologist to identify the actual cause this time.
Health Tips
Avoid restarting any old medication without your current doctor reviewing your full history first.

Irregular cycles are common in the initial 3 years following menarche. This is because the hormones and ovaries take some time to respond to the signals sent by your brain. This results in irregular periods during the initial years. You will need to take a hormonal assay, TSH, prolactin and an ultrasound.
