Hypothyroidism
My mother (68 yrs) has hypothyroidism. When we checked her thyroid levels in Aug'23, her TSH was 9.60 and hence, the doctor prescribed Thyronorm 100mcg. However her recent blood report, taken a week ago, is showing 0.103 on her TSH level. T3 is 104 and T4 is 8.12. Before Aug, she was taking Thyronorm 75 mcg but it was not working. Hence, the doc increased the dosage. She has lost a little extra weight too. Please suggest what to do.

The normal range for TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) levels is typically between 0.4 to 4.0 milliunits per liter (mU/L)1. A TSH level of 0.103 mU/L, as indicated in your mother’s recent blood report, is below the normal range and suggests that she may be experiencing symptoms of hyperthyroidism, which could explain the weight loss. Adjusting medication for hypothyroidism, such as Thyronorm (which is a brand name for levothyroxine), is a delicate process and often requires careful monitoring and frequent re-evaluation. It’s generally recommended that the dosage be adjusted in small increments, and TSH levels should be rechecked 6 to 8 weeks after any change in dosage to assess the body’s response4.
Next Steps
Given the significant drop in your mother’s TSH levels, it would be advisable to consult with her healthcare provider.
Health Tips
Please ensure that your mother continues to have her thyroid levels monitored regularly and maintains communication with her healthcare provider to manage her condition effectively.
