Hi. From last 2 years, I've seen the fear of health slowly take a toll on me.
It started with some symptoms that doctors were unable to detect on why they are happening. It turned out to be Vitamin D deficiency. Post that I've been super aware of my health. I feel small issues might be serious illnesses. I get scared by a cut thinking it might give me tetanus. A mosquito bite makes me think dengue. I have tinnitus, I've stopped going to all concerts.
This is taking a big toll on happiness. What can I do to curb down hypochondria?
Thanks.

Respected Sir,
Hypochondriasis or Hypochondriacal disorder should only be diagnosed after proper evaluation by a psychiatrist. Hypochondriacal symptoms like the ones you mentioned have to be present for a prolonged duration like 6 months or so(according to DSM) along with preoccupation and health related behaviours (which may range from excessive checking to avoidance of going to a doctor) and should be causing an impairment in your functioning. Also various other conditions like Depression, OCD, Delusional Disorder, etc have to be ruled out before arriving at a diagnosis. Hence, I do agree that you have some hypochondriacal symptoms but please defer giving yourself a diagnosis till you are evaluated in detail by a psychiatrist.
Now to address your problem, these symptoms can be treated by drugs or by therapy. With the amount of discomfort and impairment that it is causing you, I feel that you might need a combination of both. Drugs given are usually antidepressants, so it should help with your depressive symptoms as well. On the hand, therapy in the form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can be done to specifically to bring about a change in your thoughts
Next Steps
Get yourself evaluated in detail by a psychiatrist. In discussion with a psychiatrist, choose the mode of treatment that you want and be on regular follow up
Health Tips
The thoughts will take some time to change even with drugs or therpy, so don't be in a hurry and go a out changing your therapist when you see no response
