Complete the course of vaccine regimen . Mild bruising over the bit site will subside over time and make sure to observe the bit site to see if there’s any increase in pain with spread of redness and localized increases in temperature at the site.
You’ve already done most of the right things — you cleaned the area, applied ointment, and took both TT and the first rabies shot. That’s good.
Next Steps
Continue your rabies vaccine course: it’s usually taken on Day 0 (yesterday, the day you got it), then Day 3, 7, 14, and 28. Don’t miss these doses.
No need for rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) since there was no bleeding, just redness. This is considered a “Category II” exposure, so vaccines alone are enough.
Health Tips
Keep the area clean, keep applying the ointment, and watch for redness, swelling, pus, or worsening pain. If that happens, you may need oral antibiotics.
If the horse is alive and healthy, keep it under observation for 10 days. If it stays well, that’s very reassuring.
Make sure to check the wound for warning signs like increasing redness, swelling, discharge, change in colour to brownish or blackish discoloration and continue to complete your ARV dose. If any of the above changes occur or you have developed fever, visit the hospital immediately to check the wound and start antibiotics.
