Rice is generally a relatively dry preparation. I suggest he should add a sumptuous helping of Sambar or Daal or Curry or plain curds to it. He will not get hiccups He can also take a sip of water after eating each spoon of rice. It is cumbersome but he will not get hiccups.

Hiccups are majorly due to phrenic nerve(diaphragm) irritation. A detailed history is required to determine the condition causing it. Consult at your convenience.
