By oral supplements it will take a long time to reach Hb above 10 or 12. As it is around 5, better to get blood transfusion. But there are lot of complications with blood transfusion (immediate and late), so understand them with your doctor.

Depends on count and if your child is unwell with low count. If Hb is not too low and if child is well, if it due to iron deficiency anaemia- one could adapt diet ( reduce milk intake) and start iron supplements on treatment dose. If in doubt, discuss in detail with your Paediatrician
