Headache- bilateral
"I have been having a headache for the past two weeks. My recent blood test showed that my Vitamin D level is 7.5. Can low Vitamin D cause headaches? Yesterday I started taking Betacap Plus 5, but another doctor prescribed Betacap TR 40. Which one is more appropriate for my condition? Since I am feeling better today after taking Betacap Plus 5, should I continue it for 7 days?

Yes — very low Vitamin D (7.5) can definitely cause headache, neck pain, fatigue. About Betacap: Betacap Plus 5 mg → mild dose, good for tension-type headaches and anxiety. Betacap TR 40 mg → higher, long-acting dose used for migraine prevention. Since you are already feeling better with Betacap Plus 5, it is perfectly fine to continue the same for 5–7 days. You do not need the stronger Betacap TR 40 right now. Main treatment: correct the Vitamin D deficiency with 60,000 IU weekly for 8 weeks. Your headache will likely improve significantly once Vitamin D rises.

Hello, I am Dr Romain Rajan, General Physician. Your case has been allotted to me. I understand your concern. Headache lasting two weeks can be very distressing, and many patients get confused when two different medicines are advised. Let me break it down clearly. Advices 1 Stay hydrated and avoid long screen time as these worsen vitamin D related headaches. 2 Get early morning sunlight for ten to fifteen minutes daily. 3 Maintain proper sleep because poor sleep can worsen headaches even in vitamin D deficiency. What to Monitor 1 Headache worsening in the morning. 2 New dizziness, blurred vision or vomiting. 3 Pain spreading to neck or shoulders. Management Your Vitamin D level is 7.5 ng/ml, which is severely low. Yes, low vitamin D can directly cause • Headache • Fatigue • Neck stiffness • Heavy feeling in the head This is because Vitamin D deficiency affects muscle tone and nerve function around the scalp and neck. Regarding the medicines • Betacap Plus 5 contains a very low dose of propranolol plus an additional calming component for tension headaches and migraine type headaches. • Betacap TR 40 is a higher dose that is usually used for long term prevention of migraine or anxiety related headaches. Since you took Betacap Plus 5 and felt better, it indicates that your headache is likely due to tension or vitamin D deficiency related muscle spasm, not a condition requiring Betacap TR 40 immediately. So for now • Continue Betacap Plus 5 once daily for five to seven days • Start weekly high dose Vitamin D (I can guide you with the exact dose based on your report) • Avoid Betacap TR 40 unless symptoms worsen or become chronic The real correction will happen only when Vitamin D levels rise. The headache medicine is just temporary support. When to Consult a Doctor Immediately 1 Severe headache with vomiting. 2 Sudden vision changes. 3 Weakness on one side of the body. Every patient’s situation is unique. For accurate diagnosis and lasting relief, it is important to discuss your symptoms, workload, sleep pattern and vitamin D plan in detail. You can reach out to me directly for this case and also connect with me in future for any medical consultation. I am available on Practo or on WhatsApp at 85271646 seven seven for a one on one consultation where you will receive 1 A personalised treatment plan 2 Safe medicine adjustments if required 3 Quick follow ups to track your recovery Take care, wishing you good health. Good day to you ma'am I understand your concern and I am sure this must be distressing causing a hindrance in your day to day activities. However, it's good to know that you are mindful of the dosage of drug consumption as over dosage can lead to fatal effects or even death.I shall try to the best of my abilities to consult you Migraine has principally visual and sound cues but can also be triggered by stress, certain food items, lack of sleep, etc. Betacap is a combination medication of a beta blocker and a calcium channel blocker
Next Steps
These drugs are only helpful in prophylaxis and do not help in treatment of the condition So I kindly urge you to book a one to one consultation with your family physician or any physician you are comfortable with so that an extensive workup (history, investigations) can be done to know the trigger followed by appropriate treatment plan and routine and lifestyle to avoid set triggers.

1. Can low Vitamin D (7.5 ng/mL) cause headaches? — YES A Vitamin D level of 7.5 is severely deficient. Such low levels can cause: • Chronic dull headaches • Fatigue & low energy • Muscle tightness (especially neck/shoulders) • Sleep disturbance • Anxiety-like symptoms So your headaches can definitely be related to severe Vitamin D deficiency. You will need Vitamin D correction therapy, usually: • Cholecalciferol 60,000 IU weekly for 8 weeks (or as advised by your doctor) ⸻ 2. Betacap Plus 5 vs Betacap TR 40 — which one is appropriate? Betacap Plus 5 mg = • Propranolol 5 mg • Flunarizine 10 mg → This is commonly given for migraine-type headaches and tension headaches. Betacap TR 40 mg = • Propranolol 40 mg (long-acting) → Used for migraine prevention, anxiety-related headache, or high BP. Which is better for YOU? Since: • Your headache improved after Betacap Plus 5 • Your Vitamin D is severely low • You likely have a mixed migraine + muscle tension pattern
Health Tips
Seek review if: • Headache returns after stopping the medicine • You develop nausea, visual symptoms, or severe pain • Headache worsens or feels different
