Hello Doctor, my son is 16 months old and he is a preterm baby born in 33.5 weeks..
His HB level is 6 and his iron levels are too low..
His paediatrician has prescribed him Tarison drops.. been giving it for 4 days now but baby is not active like before.. He is tired most if the times and hesitates to eat anything.. I'm actually force feeding him.. and giving him everything like juices, soups, kichdi, but he seems to not like anything..
will the iron supplement cause tiredness? And why is his appetite become less or not liking it?

Symptoms are related to lw Hb. Get blood tests like serum iron and Hb electrophoresis. Baby will need a blood transfusion
Needs hospital admission ifu don't want growth failure

Iron syrup will not cause tiredness .To improve iron level start family diet to the baby .include iron rich food like green leafy vegetables ,dry fruits .can use jaggery .reduce cows milk intake .stop junk food if taking
Anemia causes tiredness and lack of interest in food. Iron supplements can alter taste slightly.
If he was active earlier and now getting dull, better to get a Checkup.
Hey , I understand your concern

Oral iron takes minimum of 1-2weeks for improvement of symptoms.
But this severe anemia requires complete evaluation.would suggest an in-person consultation
This is most likely a coincidence. Around 1 year of age, children commonly start developing likes and dislikes, and their sense of independence (ego development) also increases. Because of this, appetite and feeding patterns may seem to slow down.
Iron deficiency can also affect appetite, and giving iron supplements often helps improve it.
The tiredness and decreased appetite are because of severely low hb level. Expect an improvement in appetite after taking it for 7-10 days. Continue iron syrup for now but if no improvement seen, should also look for other causes of such severe anaemia
Such preterm baby, should have been started on iron supplements since 1m of age itself. Pls crosscheck the dose of iron given to him, is it prophylactic or therapeutic? And the first sign of response to treatment is increase in appetite which usually takes 7 days. Also it is necessary to know if there is b12 def as well
The tiredness is probably because of the anemia not the iron supplements.Iron supplements can sometimes cause gastritis but not reduced appetite.Infact appetite and general well being has to improve after starting treatment for anemia..
Next Steps
It would better to find out the cause of anemia first, since Hb of 6gm is very low for this age and then treat accordingly.
Hi
You should understand that the baby has very low levels of Hb and anything below this might need blood transfusion.
Tasiron is a good brand and side effect profile mentioned by you is less likely.
Next Steps
continue iron for 3 months. Get Cbc done after one month
Health Tips
iron might cause teeth staining, black poop or some GI issues
