Foot and calf  pain
Hello Docs, Hope you all are doing well. For the past week, whenever I go to bed, I experience pain in my foot and calf. To relieve the pain, I need to  place a pillow on my foot for pressure, which helps me fall asleep. The pain usually disappears once I start walking. Could you please advise what might be causing this and suggest remedy for this. Thanks to all in advance 😊

The pattern of pain mainly occurring at night while resting and improving after getting up and walking is commonly seen with nocturnal muscle cramps or muscular tightness. However, other causes such as nerve irritation or circulation related problems should be considered depending on the exact location and nature of the pain.
Next Steps
Try gentle calf and hamstring stretching before bedtime, adequate hydration and avoid prolonged sitting during the day. If the pain continues or becomes frequent, an examination would help identify whether it is coming from the muscles, nerves or blood vessels.
Health Tips
If you develop swelling, redness, warmth or significant tenderness in one calf, please get examined promptly. If you develop sudden chest pain or breathlessness, seek emergency medical attention.

Pain in the foot and calf that appears mainly while resting at night and improves after getting up and walking can occur with nocturnal muscle cramps or sometimes restless legs syndrome. Restless legs typically causes uncomfortable sensations while resting, especially at night, with temporary relief on moving the legs. For now, adequate hydration, gentle calf/hamstring stretching before bed, regular activity and gentle massage or warmth may help.
Next Steps
Since this has been occurring for a week, if it persists or keeps disturbing sleep, consult a physician/orthopaedic doctor for examination. Depending on the history, evaluation for iron deficiency, medication-related causes or other metabolic/neurological causes may be considered
Health Tips
If the pain is mainly in one leg and is associated with new swelling, warmth, redness/discolouration or tenderness, seek prompt medical assessment to rule out a DVT (blood clot). Sudden breathlessness or chest pain requires emergency evaluation.

Please check for swelling, redness or warmth of the calf, localized calf tenderness, numbness/tingling, weakness, recent prolonged travel/immobility, injury, or fever. If there is significant calf swelling/pain, sudden worsening of symptoms, or breathlessness/chest pain, urgent medical evaluation is advised to rule out a blood clot. For now: • Avoid prolonged standing and strenuous exercise for a few days. • Gentle calf and plantar fascia stretching can be done twice daily. • Use comfortable, supportive footwear. • A warm compress over the calf/foot for 10–15 minutes may provide relief. • If symptoms persist beyond 1–2 weeks or worsen, an in-person orthopaedic examination is recommended. If you can provide the exact site of maximum pain, whether one or both legs are affected, presence/absence of swelling, and any recent increase in walking/exercise or prolonged sitting/travel, the assessment can be more specific.
