Food infection
Hello Doctor, My mother is 53 years old , For the past 2 months, she has been experiencing abdominal pain every time she eats, even if it's a very small amount of food. The pain starts soon after eating. She has a medical history of Parkinson's disease, fibromyalgia, recurrent fatty liver, kidney stones, and piles. Additionally, in November, January, and March, she had episodes of infection with vomiting and loose motions. She consulted a doctor each time and was treated with medications and injections, after which she recovered. Could you please advise what the possible causes of her current symptoms could be? Could this be related to her liver, gallbladder, stomach, or any other digestive condition? What investigations would you recommend? Should she consult a gastroenterologist, and does this require urgent evaluation? Also, is there any medication that can provide temporary relief from the pain until she is evaluated by a specialist? If yes, please suggest

Given your mother's medical history, the most important possibility to consider is gastroparesis — delayed stomach emptying — which is very commonly associated with Parkinson's disease. The autonomic nervous system controls stomach motility, and Parkinson's damages these nerves over time, causing the stomach to empty slowly. This results in pain starting soon after even small meals, early fullness, bloating, and episodic vomiting — all of which match her symptoms. This is actually one of the most common and underdiagnosed GI complications of Parkinson's disease. Additionally, her fatty liver and recurrent infection episodes suggest possible biliary involvement (gallbladder or bile duct issue) as a contributing factor. A peptic ulcer or gastritis from H. pylori is also possible given the recurrent GI episodes.
Next Steps
Yes, she needs urgent evaluation by a Gastroenterologist — this has gone on for 2 months and is affecting her nutrition. Recommended investigations: abdominal ultrasound, upper GI endoscopy (OGD scope), H. pylori test, LFT, KFT, lipase, and HbA1c. If gastroparesis is confirmed, the treatment involves dietary changes (small frequent meals, low-fat, low-fibre), medication adjustments, and sometimes prokinetic medicines. Also, inform her Neurologist about these GI symptoms as Parkinson's medication absorption can be affected by delayed gastric emptying. Please consult me directly on Practo for a detailed evaluation.
