The normal body rectal temperature for a healthy infant is 97-100.3 degrees F.
Why rectal: because the rectal temperature is least affected by external factors, & hence most reliable/consistent (although with more attendant risk of measuring)
American Academy of Pediatrics suggests doctor assessment if a baby between 3-6 months old has a fever over 101 degrees F (38.3 degrees C) or higher, or is older than 6 months and has a temperature of 103 degrees F (39.4 degrees C) or higher -& has symptoms such as a loss of appetite, cough, signs of an earache, unusual fussiness or sleepiness, or vomiting or diarrhea.

temperature rises by late afternoon to early evening & falls by midnight to early morning, which is normal diurnal rhythm.
