29. Male. 5'6". 76 kg.
I had been working at fellowship program. I left it because I felt pay was too small for work I was supposed to do. I also felt it exhausting to continue working there for 6 months. I also felt empty, dry, emotionless and had problems with focusing attention. Felt like my mind was fickle. It felt as if I was knew what someone was saying or what was happening around me but I couldn't feel it in my body and mind
I will be honest. I have searched for these symptoms on chatgpt. But wanted an opinion from a professional.
Chatgpt says this is depression.
Does this sound like depression? Isn't depression associated with sadness, worthlessness, hopelessness, guilt and low mood. My mood was empty and i was emotionless and had no guilt, sadness, worthlessness, hopelessness or low mood. If not depression what does this sound like?

Hello,
You’ve described feeling empty, detached, emotionless, mentally exhausted, and unable to focus. While many people associate depression only with sadness or guilt, it can also present in other ways such as emptiness, loss of interest, reduced emotional experience, fatigue, and concentration problems. These symptoms can fall under atypical or “anhedonic” presentations of depression.
That said, what you describe could also overlap with dissociation, burnout, or even attention-related conditions (like ADHD). It’s not always one diagnosis, and sometimes symptoms overlap between different mental health conditions.
Next Steps
a. The best way forward is a psychiatric evaluation to explore whether this is depression, burnout, anxiety-related dissociation, or another condition.
b. Meanwhile, keep track of your sleep, appetite, concentration, and emotional responses- this helps your doctor clarify the diagnosis.
c. Therapy (like CBT or supportive therapy) can help explore the feeling of emptiness, even if it doesn’t feel like “classic” depression.
Health Tips
Online resources (including ChatGPT) can provide general information but cannot replace a professional diagnosis. Please do not self-diagnose- get a proper assessment so treatment (if needed) can be tailored.

Emotional emptiness and feeling disconnected can sometimes be a form of depression or related to burnout. Depression does not always present with sadness-it can also appear as numbness, lack of interest, and difficulty engaging emotionally.
Next Steps
A detailed evaluation with a mental health professional will help clarify the cause. Psychotherapy such as CBT, supportive therapy, or mindfulness-based approaches can be very helpful. If needed, medication may also be considered after assessment.
Health Tips
Try to maintain regular sleep, balanced meals, and physical activity. Gentle routines like journaling or relaxation practices may help reconnect with your emotions. If symptoms persist or worsen, please seek professional support without delay.

Could be a myriad of things before we diagnose it as depression. Yet, the symptoms you mentioned are worth giving attention to. When people think of a diagnosis, it's not important if the problem falls into a category listed as a clinical pathology. Anything that may be causing problems in your daily functioning and resulting in some distress is just as valid a concern as any diagnosable symptom or condition.
Next Steps
seek a psycho therapist. it helps you to look at the underlying causes and helps to do better.
Health Tips
Don't neglect the condition. it's important to pay attention to your experience.

Hey there
It does not fully match the typical picture of depression. Many people think depression only means sadness, hopelessness or guilt, but it can also appear as emptiness, numbness, lack of interest, fatigue and trouble focusing. Sometimes people do not feel sad but feel flat and disconnected, as if life is happening around them without really being part of it. That can still be a form of depression.
Your experience of knowing what is happening but not feeling it in your body also overlaps with dissociation or depersonalization. This often comes with burnout or overwhelming stress. Leaving a demanding fellowship and then feeling exhausted and emotionally dry points strongly to burnout with dissociative symptoms. The important part is not just the label but how much it is affecting your focus, emotions and daily life. Therapy can help you reconnect, manage burnout, and bring back a sense of balance.
