Facial asymmetry - dental or surgery?
Hello, I had braces when I was 20 and kept them for about 1.5 years - after those braces, I started seeing more asymmetry in my face. Now I am 30 and I see the asymmetry increasing yoy. I want to check if this can be taken care by braces? Of course I can't afford to have metal or ceramic braces as I am in journalism and from the aesthetic pov I can't. I can either have invisalign (heard that doesn't work for extreme overbite) or lingual braces. Before I consult with an orthodontist, I want to check if that will correct the issue of asymmetry or I will have to opt for surgery? Important information- at the age of 13, some random dentist extracted two of my tooths 6-7 molars I guess (highlighted in the picture) and I got implantation done when I was 28, that could have caused asymmetry too right? Looking for very honest and experienced recommendations please. Won't kind paying but all the dentists I visited don't give suggestions but try to make money only :)

Dear, Concerns about facial asymmetry post-braces are valid. _Possible causes of asymmetry:_ 1. Uneven tooth movement during orthodontic treatment. 2. Premature tooth extraction (at 13). 3. Implant placement (at 28). 4. Natural growth and development. _Invisalign limitations:_ 1. Severe overbites or underbites. 2. Complex tooth movements. _Lingual braces:_ 1. Aesthetic alternative to traditional braces. 2. Effective for mild-moderate asymmetry. _Surgical considerations:_ 1. Orthognathic surgery (correcting jaw alignment). 2. Facial contouring surgery. _Consult an orthodontist:_ 1. Evaluate facial asymmetry and tooth alignment. 2. Assess implant placement. 3. Discuss treatment options. _Questions to ask:_ 1. Can lingual braces or Invisalign address my asymmetry? 2. What role did premature tooth extraction play? 3. Are surgical options necessary? _Additional recommendations:_ 1. Seek multiple orthodontic consultations. 2. Consider 3D scanning and simulation. 3. Document progress. Best regards, Dr. Pratikshit Anand Additional guidance: - Request before-and-after photos. - Ask about treatment duration and cost. - Ensure your orthodontist listens to concerns.

Hello. Looking at the picture you attached, can't comment correctly on facial asymmetry as grossly it isnt asymmetrical. Also the history you mentioned, can you please mention as what prosthesis were you wearing in the region of tooth extracted 17years ago. I would also advise an OPG to rule out the underlying problem. But most probably, looks like a dental asymmetry which can be corrected with orthodontic treatment . For braces and aligners, in clinic examination required to give correct treatment options.

Dear practo user, By picture it seems to be asymmetry due to teeth issues and not becoz of extra oral thing. You to have more history of tooth extraction for braces or more clinical photos or check up to come to definte diagnosis.
Next Steps
yes this can be corrected, treatment options depends upon clinical situation and which is best for you.
Health Tips
don't panic it's treatable.

Hey girl, i dont feel any kind of that major issue of assymetry with your face. No one has facial symmetry unless they get botox done or some face surgery. As u have mentioned that around 13 you got your molars extracted and in your late 20s you ve got implants, so around that time there was bone loss , that can be the reason of minute changes, but i dont feel any problem with your face and smile. If u are okay with your smile.

According to the picture uploaded, you have a slight midline shift and slight upper maxillary protuberance. This can be treated by orthodontic treatment . Bony corrections may need orthodontic mini implant support . Orthodontist may advice Radiograph (lateral ceph radiograph. xray)assessment in your case Severe skeletal asymmetry can’t be corrected by mini implants that has to be done with surgical correction. Only front facial profile is accessible with this pic. proper clinical and radiographic examination is must for your case For Invisalign also they will do a intra oral scan first. Then only they will plan your case
Next Steps
Better consult and orthodontist
Health Tips
(Bone growth will stop by the age of 15-17 yrs, skeletal asymmetries are treatable without surgery if you were reported before this age. Age limit is different for boys and girls)

Hello pt, The jaw growth stops at around age of 15-16. So there is no reason for facial asymmetry due to jaw growth. Apart from this some facial changes can se been in orthodontic treatment. Moreover implants can't change the facial or bone morphology.
