Eye sight - not able to read and write
Hi Doctor, My father is having trouble with his vision for the past 4-5 days. He's unable to read and write that is of shorter distance like book, TV and mobile. He can read very big fonts and can see colors and pictures. He had cataract surgery for both the eyes in 2015. Once in 2017 he had infection and got laser treatment for the same. Could you please suggest if there's anything to worry about. Due to lockdown in the city, earliest appointment available is on Friday. Any measures to be taken till then so that it doesn't deteriorate. Thanks. Sahana

Ask for any floaters or cowwebs, blurring in the center,or distortion of letters in reading..seems like Age related macular degeneration.

He will need a complete examination as there can be a number if causes for sudden decrease in vision. However in the absence of any acute symptoms like pain or redness the cause is more likely to be chronic or slowly evolving and less likely to worsen in the next few days to weeks. Given the present unfortunate circumstances these days and given his age, it is best to avoid getting him into any public space in the near future unless there is an emergency.
Next Steps
Keep his symptoms under close observation and schedule a clinic appointment for a complete examination once the present global healthcare situation is under control. Please continue all existing medications if any and get him to take adequate bed rest and hydrate well for now. Please feel free to get in touch in case you need any further assistance. Hope this helps.

Hi Sahana, At 85 years age, most likely he might be developing Age related macular degeneration... If he finds the face of a person blurred or line wavy while reading, most likely he will be having it. He would need to be examined...
