Both psychiatrists and psychologists can provide exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, the approach to treatment and the type of professional you choose to work with may depend on several factors. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in mental health. They are licensed to prescribe medication and can also provide therapy. If you are experiencing severe symptoms of OCD or have co-occurring mental health conditions that require medication management, a psychiatrist may be the best choice for you. In addition to providing medication, they may also provide cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), including ERP. Psychologists are mental health professionals who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders. They are not licensed to prescribe medication, but they can provide therapy. If you prefer a non-medication approach to treating OCD or have a mild-to-moderate case, a psychologist may be the best choice for you. They can provide CBT, including ERP, and other evidence-based therapies. It is important to find a mental health professional who is trained , licensed and experienced in treating OCD with ERP. Look for a therapist who has specific training in ERP for OCD and has a good understanding of how to implement the therapy effectively. You can ask for recommendations from your primary care physician, mental health clinics, or support groups
