Effects of anxiety?
I have been suffering from severe anxiety and intrusive thoughts for 10 years. I haven't seen a doctor regarding this yet because I don't want to get dependent on pills. Recently I have been experiencing short term memory loss. For example say if I have taken a dosage of medicine after a meal, after a while I am unable to remember whether I took the dose or no. I have to literally count the no of remaining tablets to check if I took the dose. I have also begun to stammer on a mild to moderate scale(I used to never stammer). I am really worried that the anxiety has done some brain damage. What are the adverse long term effects of constant anxiety? Could it cause any brain damage? I don't know whom to talk to this about.

Sometimes chronic untreated anxiety can lead to secondary depression which may cause lack of concentration & may even present with memory loss. There may be other reasons as well but needs evaluation. You need to visit a trained mental health professional- psychiatrist, psychologist who can suggest you appropriate medication or therapy , relaxation techniques after assessment. They will also address your concerns about medication. Not all psychiatry medication are dependence, many of them are non habit forming if taken under doctor's supervision.
