Diabetic Nephropathy
My father has just been diagnosed with Diabetic Nephropathy. His Creatinine, Serum is 3.75 and GSR, estimated is 16. We have an appointment with Nephrologist tomorrow. Is Dialysis the only option? I have heard of some EPO injections... Can that help? How effective is dialysis treatment and whats the procedure for the same? Plz give an idea how much it costs?

Hello yes dialysis is the only option. Dialysis is very effective since GFR is very low. This means that the filteration power of kidney has gone drastically down. So dialysis is manual filteration of wasted from blood. It’s basically a kidney function through machine. Cost depend upon the frequency of dialysis required and varies from hosp settings. Most of the hospitals charge 500-1000 per dialysis. Your father might require three per week. Second Optiom is peritoneal dialysis which is done once a day or week depending on condition of patient. That can be done by family members. But training is required. And it has to be done in absolute hygiene environment. It cost 3000/- to 5000/- for once time procedure and 500-700 per dialysis. Since it can be done at home patient are more comfortable with it.
