You need to differentiate between normal situational sadness and depression. If you are experiencing fluctuations in mood with mostly feeling low, with tiredness or lethargy, lack of concentration, motivation including losing interest and enjoyment in things you used to enjoy in the past... all these could be symptoms of depression. Some people could even experience anxiety, irritability, become tearful, with reduced sleep and appetite including negative thoughts like hopelessness, guilt etc. Moreover if it is going on for too long and clearly affecting some aspect of your life like, work, family or studies etc it is likely to be depression and you need to consult a psychiatrist. Most depressions are treated with psychological counselling, lifestyle modifications and addressing any underlying issues. Occasionally medicine may be given too. Regards
