I am a medico preparing for pg entrance this is my 2nd year of attempt I feel I am facing severe depression I m unable to focus on my studies I sometimes keep sitting n staring on any particular object with constant tension going on in my mind I don't feel like eating I m unable to sleep and sometimes I feel like eating a lot n I keep sleeping whole day I don't have interest in activities in which earlier I was interested I don't want to even clean my surroundings or change my dress or do my day to day activities I always hv negative thoughts in my mind like I m useless I should die I hv no one to share my feelings so I started taking sertaline 50 mg bt I feel I am gaining weight due to this medicine plz suggest what should I do as my exams are very near

It is advisable that you start practicing yoga and meditation on a regular basis , try and maintain a healthy lifestyle as eating healthy is very crucial . Try and talk to your close family members and friends and engage yourself in activities which involve them. Try and put alarms on your phone as reminders of tasks to be done . Try and maintain a thought journal in which you can write 3 positive events of the day. It is suggested that you seek help from a clinical psychologist for a proper diagnosis and formulation of a treatment plan to help you learn positive and healthy coping strategies for the same . Hi I can see that you are quite distressed. Feeling low, lack of interest, crying spells, feeling hopeless, disturbed sleep and appetite are all symptoms of depression. Please see a psychiatrist for a detailed evaluation which also includes a physical examination and blood test to rule out any physical cause like thyroid abnormality. Treatment of depression consists of medications as well as psychological therapy. Sertraline is an antidepressant used in treatment of depression.it cam take upto 2-4 weeks to start showing an effect.however, if it has not worked for you or if you are getting side effects there are a lot of other medications options.
