Hi, I understand you are worried about your friend. You can consult a psychologist and explain about his situation. You don’t have to feel helpless you can explain about what he is going through with a psychologist.
If he is willing to meet and stay with his close friends it could be a good sign. It will be good if you can explain about his home situation and the kind of relationship he has with his family.
Next Steps
Consult a psychologist.

Dear human, thank you for sharing and reaching out. Firstly, I appreciate your effort to seek help for your loved one. From what you've said it sounds like the person is experiencing intense symptoms and he might need help. Right now, he needs a supportive environment and a safe space to talk about this issues. Only he might know why he is feeling like this, what can be the causes and what can be done to manage this.
Few things can be done to support him:
1. Actively listen to him when he is talking or sharing anything. Show that you're there for him and that you're listening to him no matter what. Indicate through body languages like nodding your head, maintaining eye contact, etc.
2. If he is not willing to share you can initiate the conversation. Begin by asking them, "You sound kind of low today, do you wanna talk about it?", "How can I be of help?", 'I might not exactly understand what you're going through, but I'm here for you".
3. Try not to trivialise his issues by talking about how you've gone through something similar or someone who might experienced something similar. Right now they might need someone to support and hear them out and not to know about your experiences.
4. Do not try to fix his issues or offer solutions. That is not they are looking for right now.
5. Convince him to seek therapy as it would help to explore his concerns in a safe and non-judgmental space, vent out his thoughts and feelings and figure a beneficial way to manage this.
Hope this helps :) Take care!
If possible, try to fix an appointment with a therapist for him..
Maybe he is unhappy or upset about his parents or some misunderstanding or so..

Hi... Pls inform his parents/teachers at the earliest. Talking about suicide is a red flag. It cannot be ignored.
He need to take a Psychiatric Consultation to evaluate the severity of his suicidal urges. If some medication is prescribed do take it.
Psychotherapy/Counselling will help him deal with his underlying core issues (academic, Interpersonal, self esteem, etc.) and peripheral issues (loss of interest, lack of focus, diet, etc).
Clinical depression requires both medication and therapy. In his case depression might be in early stages but since suicidal ideations are present, Psychiatric evaluation is a must.
Next Steps
Consult a Psychiatrist first and then a Psychologist for Counselling. Inform his parents/teachers at the earliest.
