After removal of milk teeth it is prudent to fix a space maintainer so that space for the eruption of the permanent successor teeth is assured.
It would be helpful if I knew your son's age and which tooth has been removed.
Sometimes space maintainers may not be given if the permanent tooth is near eruption which can be determined by patient's age or xray of the tooth.
Consult a dentist personally for a clinical evaluation.
