In olden days metal ceramic crowns are used for replacement but there was exposure of metal part as days go so they were not aesthetically preferred. This was replaced by full ceramic crown where the metal part was completely replaced by ceramic so there was no metal exposure and was aesthetically accepted .they are used both in front and back tooth since they allow light to pass through it, with good strength and durability. There are various types of full ceramic crown like zirconia, eMax. So zirconia is one form of full ceramic crown there is no difference between full ceramic crown and zirconia as such.
Zirconia is a special type of metal free crown with the strength and durability of a metal..
It is fracture resistant..
It looks more natural compared to previous generation porcelain fused to metal crowns..
It is generally given in for the back teeth..it takes care of both strength and appearance.
Full ceramic crown even though it is metal free is very fragile..it can chip off when subject to strong forces..
Hence it is mostly indicated for the front teeth where appearance is prime concern
