Cough is not the disease it is the symptoms of underlying disease so it important to rule out the cause of the disease.
For the proper diagnosis I need more details regarding the case so I would like to suggest you consult with doctor first then take any medicine.
Because long term cough could be due to TB, bronchitis etc.

Please consult over phone for detailed case history and right prescription for your husband. Case is already going towards chronic. Dry non productive cough is often allergic in nature although other underlying pathology need to be ruled out after proper case history. Dont use over the counter syrup.

Cough Syrups in Homoeopathy has no place and if you find one in homoeopathic chemist shop then that is not as per principles of homoeopathy. It is advised that patient may regularly inhale steam four times a day, and after 30 minutes of taking steam he may do gargles with hot saline water. He may avoid moving out in dusty environment.
