I turned 30 this October, and it has been exactly two years since I got married. We are planning to conceive, so I started taking folic acid tablets.
However, I have a concern. I have been taking folic acid tablets since the first week of June, so it has been approximately five months now. But I haven't conceived yet.
Due to certain reasons and personal circumstances, we had to postpone our pregnancy plans. Initially, we were hoping to conceive around September or October, which is why I started taking folic acid (5mg) in June.
However, now we may have to postpone our pregnancy plans until January or February.
My question is: Is there any problem with continuing to take folic acid tablets until then? I have already been taking them for about five months.
The other concern is regarding the dosage. I am currently taking 5 mg folic acid tablets, which is considered a high dose.
Should I continue taking the 5 mg tablets until we start trying to conceive, or should I reduce the dosage?
Folic acid is safe to keep taking for several more months without any time-limit concern, so continuing until January or February is fine on its own. The higher-strength tablet you're on is usually prescribed for a specific reason, such as diabetes, a higher body weight, or a family history, rather than for routine preconception use.
Next Steps
Check with whoever prescribed the higher strength why it was chosen for you, since that decides whether to continue it as is or switch to the standard preconception strength while you wait. There's no harm in continuing meanwhile.
