Cold and Sleep difficulty Cariprazine
My wife is a Bipolar disorder patient, she faced her 2nd episode 3 years ago (post pregnancy). After that, the doctor prescribed her Lithium carbonate 300 mg tablet, 3 tablets every day before dinner, and she was fine. But a week ago she was feeling a little depressed. So I visited my doctor and the doctor prescribed her Cariprazine 1.5 mg capsules, 1 capsule everyday after breakfast. Now she is feeling better, but after taking Cariprazine for three days she is unable to sleep more than 3-4 hours at night, and also she have cold. My question is, will this sleeping problem will cure automatically? Or the Cold will cure automatically? Should I visit my psychiatrist immediately?

You need to have a detailed work up done, blood tests to see if there is reduced immunity. Cariprazine is a newer medication, if not suitable you need to consult your psychiatrist and get it changed to something more suitable. Low dose D2 antagonists can also be used as mood stabilisers which promote sleep and also help in aiding remission in Bipolar disorder.

Cariprazine is a good novel medication for bipolar depression but unfortunately there can be some side effects as with any medication. Most are not worrisome and will subside with continued use. Cariprazine can cause restlessness and decreased sleep and also cause temporary decrease in white blood cells which may lower immunity and cause infections like cold. please visit your Psychiatrist at the earliest to inform of these symptoms and to discuss if any medication can be added for improving sleep
