How many ml was your post void residue? When evaluating patients with voiding dysfunction, noninvasive tests such as uroflowmetry and measurement of postvoid residual urine volume (PVR) can help to determine whether additional testing is warranted. PVR can be measured by 2 methods: catheterization or bedside bladder ultrasonography. Although both methods have advantages, the convenience, efficiency, and safety of bladder ultrasound makes its use beneficial in a wide variety of populations, including hospitalized patients, children, and the elderly. More recently, bladder ultrasound has been used for other procedures, such as evaluation of intravesical masses, and to determine bladder wall thickness and bladder wall mass, both of which have been associated with outflow. During trabeculation, the bladder wall thickens as the muscles work to overcome the obstructions in the urethra, according to Spinal Hub. The thickened muscular wall is the result of an enlargement of the muscular sleeve surrounding the bladder and can result in loss of elasticity. Urinary obstruction is detected by a decreased urine flow and pain, according to Medscape. Those concerned about urinary obstruction should consult with a urologist to perform a physical examination, urinalysis, and an ultrasound of the bladder and urethra to detect the presence of an obstruction that may lead to trabeculation if left untreated.
