Hello doctor, I am 38 years old. Today in the afternoon I was eating food. After eating food, I was eating banana and while swallowing I started having pain in my chest. I stopped it. After a few hours, I drank a cold and light sherbet. I drank it quickly and then I started having pain while swallowing. Doctor, why did this happen? What should I do?

Dear Patient,
This can happen due to esophageal spasm, acidity, or mild food-pipe irritation after swallowing.
Avoid very cold drinks, spicy food, and fast eating for now.
Take small sips, soft diet, and eat slowly.
If pain persists, recurs, or you develop breathlessness, vomiting, or severe chest pain, get evaluated.

Possible reasons:
• Esophageal spasm – sudden contraction of the food pipe while swallowing.

The pain you felt while swallowing after eating food and banana is most likely related to irritation or spasm of the food pipe, medically called the esophagus. Conditions such as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or a temporary esophageal spasm can cause sudden pain when swallowing food or drinks, especially if food is swallowed quickly or if the esophagus gets irritated.
Drinking something quickly, especially cold liquids, can sometimes trigger this spasm, which explains why the pain returned when you drank sherbet quickly. This is usually temporary and not dangerous if it settles within a short time.
Next Steps
For the next few days, try to keep the stomach acid under control. Doctors commonly prescribe medicines like Pantoprazole to reduce stomach acid and allow the esophagus to heal.
Eat soft and easily digestible food and avoid swallowing large bites of food quickly.
If the pain continues for more than a few days, or if you develop persistent difficulty swallowing, vomiting, or severe chest pain, you should consult a doctor. Sometimes a test like Upper GI Endoscopy may be advised to evaluate the food pipe.
Health Tips
Eat slowly and chew food properly before swallowing.
Avoid very spicy, oily, or very hot and very cold foods for a few days.
Do not lie down immediately after eating.
Drink liquids slowly rather than gulping them quickly.
If this symptom repeats or you continue to have pain while swallowing, you can book an online consultation so I can assess your symptoms in detail and guide you with the right treatment plan.
You might not have similar problem in past but chest pain due to swallowing should be evaluated, my suggestion is do a UGI endoscopy . If symptoms are not severe now take PPI(pan 40) for at least 6 weeks with antacid syrup, avoid fast eating and avoid swallowing of large solid food it may cause chest pain again .
Most likely diagnosis:
Esophageal spasm causing painful swallowing (Odynophagia) after rapid swallowing of food or cold drink.
.
Rapid swallowing or cold liquids can trigger transient esophageal muscle spasm, leading to chest pain during swallowing.
Advice (short):
Eat slowly and chew food well
Avoid very cold drinks, spicy and oily food
Take Rabeprazole 20 mg once daily before breakfast for 5–7 days
Consult doctor if: pain persists, difficulty swallowing increases, or severe chest pain occurs.
