My 4.5-year-old son has been suffering from loose motion (2–4 times/day), vomiting (1–2 times/day), occasional middle chest pain, low appetite, and mild weakness for the past 3 days. He’s been prescribed Lanspro 15 (empty stomach), Aglozyme C (twice daily after food), Regutol Mini (once daily), and ORS. However, there’s little improvement, and symptoms persist—especially loose stool and chest discomfort. Could this be a viral infection or food-related issue? Should we consider any change in medication or further investigation? Kindly suggest the next steps for diagnosis or relief. Thank you.

Hello
Most viral diarrheal illnesses settle in 5–7 days
Ensure hydration, rest, and medication as advised
Follow up if no improvement after stool test or Metrogyl course
Most likely viral gastroenteritis (common in children)
Amoebiasis is a possibility — especially if there is:
•Gas and abdominal cramps before loose motions
•Foul-smelling or mucus-containing stools
•History of unclean water/food consumption
Next Steps
If amoebiasis is suspected: Start Metrogyl (Metronidazole) 5 ml three times/day for 5 days (as advised by doctor)
If unsure: Do a stool routine and microscopy to confirm infection
Continue ORS frequently to prevent dehydration
Maintain a bland, soft diet: rice, curd, banana, khichdi
Health Tips
Red flags:
Signs of dehydration (dry mouth, sunken eyes, low urine)
High fever, persistent vomiting, or blood in stools
Chest pain that worsens or affects breathing

The symptoms are of gastroenteritis. Could be viral. But could also be because of amoebiasis - Is there stomach cramps followed by diarrhea or too much of gas too? If yes, can start Syp Metrogyl 5 ml three times a day for 5 days
If not suggestive of amoebiasis - get a stool routine done to clarify the picture.
Give him soft and bland diet, cooked at home. Khitchri, curd, bananas, apple, curd and rice, soft noodles, white toasted bread. Reduce milk intake. Add Zinc syrup ( Syp Zinconia ) 5 ml per day for 2 weeks
Rest of the medication prescribed are fine, can continue
