Cause of hearing loss in child
My 4 year old daughter has high frequency hearing loss, a speech delay and had a gross motor delay that she has overcome after physical therapy. My other 22 month old daughter also has hearing loss but we do not know the extent. I am wondering if it would be important to determine the cause. It has been suggested that it could have been due to a congenital disease such as congenital toxoplasmosis or congenital CMV. Are there tests to detect these? If so, would treatment prevent other problems?

No use of performing test at this stage to diagnose congenital infections. Mostly its a clinical diagnosis if all other finding are there. BERA tests only signify extent of hearing loss. Less likely congenital infection as a cause in two siblings that too after a gap of 2 years. Consult your pediatrician or pediatric neurologist for any other inherited disease or syndromic association. He will definitely advice you some more tests if needed after complete clinical examination.
