My uncle needs a cataract surgery to his left eye. But his haemoglobin is only 5. Is it okay to go under cataract surgery when haemoglobin is less.

Hello What is the cause for anaemia? In my opinion, take physician opinion once and only after his clearance, cataract surgery should be planned

Hello Modern day cataract surgeries are associated with almost no blood loss.BUt cataract surgery being an elective surgery, any risk shouldnt be taken. What we normally do for our otherwise normal anemic patients is that we start them on a course of iron and folic acid tablets for 2-3 weeks, and recheck the haemoglobin.can operate if it reaches a value of above 8. Next Steps
consult MD medicine doctor for the same full blood work up to rule out other rare causes of anaemia
Health Tips
dont worry.its nothing that can't be sorted

Cataract surgery is almost never a surgical emergency. Get him investigated to find out the cause of the anemia, treat the cause and bring up the HB to around 10; does not matter if surgery is delayed by a few months. Maskatieyeclinic Opposite Charni Road station east, Mumbai

Though the surgery is possible but this much low haemoglobin is not good for health and post operative healing. So please get one or two whole blood transfusion doe to raise the haemoglobin and then get the surgery done..
