It sounds like you might be dealing with a condition called cheilitis, which is when the skin around the lips becomes irritated, red, and cracked. This can sometimes lead to peeling, dryness, and even bleeding, as you mentioned. Swelling around the area can also happen, especially if it has been going on for a few days. To soothe your lips, you can start with a gentle, hydrating ointment. I usually recommend a bland, fragrance-free option like plain petroleum jelly or a thick lip balm without any added flavors or fragrances. Applying this regularly will help lock in moisture and protect the delicate skin while it heals. Avoid licking your lips, as it can make the dryness and peeling worse. Sometimes, a mild hydrocortisone ointment can also help reduce redness and swelling. However, this should only be used sparingly and for short periods, as overuse can lead to further irritation. If the symptoms persist, it would be best to see a dermatologist and get a few blood tests for vitamin deficiencies. Also, they can prescribe a stronger ointment if needed and rule out any possible infections.
