Total days of bleeding including spotting should not be more than 7
So if the period begins with a brown discharge and the total days of bleeding do not go beyond 7 it is fine

Get hormonal profile and ultrasound done to rule out the cause of irregularities. Brown discharge can be because your periods are about to start.
